Garman Yip has quite a history with AAU.

He graduated with an MFA in 2005 with a bang, winning first place that year at the SIGGRAPH Student Interactive Media Competition for his work, Poetic Waves. The project is a moving exploration and documentation of the Chinese internment camp at Angel Island. Today, Garman is back at AAU, exploring new frontiers as its Online Director for the BFA Program.

AAU is fortunate to benefit from the tremendous three years of experience Garman has gained since graduation. First, he focused on Flash design at both Method in San Francisco and Juxt Interactive in Newport Beach, California. He also taught web design at the University of Southern California, Los Angeles, where he received his Bachelor of Science in Business Marketing prior to getting his MFA at AAU.

Later he worked as a designer for Deadline Advertising where he created websites for feature film releases and worked with media buyers to develop online advertisement strategies to drive traffic.

As the lead interactive art director at TBWA/Chiat/Day in Los Angeles for the launch of the Sony Playstation 3 console, Garman coordinated viral marketing, special effects, and video production efforts for Playstation as well as for Visa, Absolut, Hoover and X Games.  The PlayBeyond.com site won numerous awards at Cannes Lions, One Show, and the Addys. The Sony Playstation 3

Then, as senior art director for Disney/PIXAR’s Wall-E theatrical release, he launched interactive campaigns through tease, pre-launch and launch phases. He also provided creative and design support for Apple product launches.

Fresh off his first semester as Online Director, he sees promise with online degrees as more companies realize the value of employees harnassing the power of design and deploying it across various media.

“We have have had a large increase in new incoming students into Web Design + New Media online due to increasing demand in the work place.”

What a CV, & for someone so young! I was fortunate to meet Garman at the Academy of Art U’s Spring Show & came away thoroughly impressed.
